Arrival, Activities, and Departure

Daily activities are suggested below.  We of course will be very flexible, and are leaving Tuesday and Wednesday very open to individual's preferences.

Our thoughts are as follows:

Saturday -- I think as Dad (Roger) has indicated, he is arranging airport transportation for Dawn and Henry, Kelly and Duke, and the large Ivan family arrival.  For the first two groups, there is only a two-hour window between arrivals, so we'll probably ask Kelly and Duke to hang out at the airport for a bit.  We are staying at Mogen Hall at CLU, which has an address of 3265 Luther Ave.  It is most easily approached on Campus Drive, however, and is at the end of Campus Drive and is one of the buildings in a traffic turnaround.

Once people arrive at CLU, you will be greeted and be given a room key by a family member.

Sunday -- We've planned Sunday morning for a time of travel recovery.  There is a Lutheran church quite close by for those interested, or individuals can sleep in, visit the pool, or walk around campus.  On Sunday afternoon we are planning a trip to the Reagan Library (within five miles of CLU).  For this outing, along with all other outings, entry fees will be paid by individuals.

Monday -- On Monday we've planned one of my favorite activities...travel to the beach for a beach BBQ.   I will be bicycling to the beach, and would invite anyone who feels up to it to bike with me.  The trip is about nine miles (after driving to a trail-head) and consists of travel on a mix of paved and packed-earth roads.  At the beach, we will provide a few boogey-boards (I think) and a beach game or two.  Individuals not interested in biking will be shuttled.  June 22 edit -- I have lined up five bikes in addition to the two bikes we own for the beach ride.  We will also have four boogey boards for those that are willing to risk the very cold July ocean water.

This is the beach.  Hopefully we'll have some clear weather on July 2nd.

Tuesday -- Tuesday is left open for individuals to plan their own activities.  Of course, we'll only have a limited number of vehicles, so hopefully there is some consensus.  We will provide transportation...again assuming that people decide on no more than two or three locations.

Options are listed in the table below.  We'll discuss options at the reunion to make a final plan.

Wednesday -- Wednesday is also left open, although we would suggest gathering relatively early in the afternoon on Wednesday to make a plan to watch fireworks!  There is also a local concert in the park that evening as an option.

Thursday -- Formal departure for some.  As with arrival, Roger will provide transportation to the airport if needed.

Week's Activies

Lodging at the Luxurious Mogen Hall

California Lutheran University offers (for real) some of the nicest university resident housing (we never use the dorm word) in the country.  We will be staying in six suites in the hall.  Dad (Roger) and I made up room assignments that are demonstrated on the meal page...of course any group is free to change up assignments as they see fit.

As I mentioned, our rooms are quite nice, and feature a full kitchen, two bedrooms, and a private bathroom.

The disadvantage, however of living in university housing in the summer is that there is no living room furniture, television, or microwave.  Moreover, the beds are single beds.

Dad and I will be piecing together some makeshift living room furniture for all the rooms.  Please be prepared for lots of folding chair comfort!  We will also be (if all works to plan) pushing together beds and forming double beds.

I think I will be able to get wireless access for people bringing laptops or other handheld devices, although I have not yet checked.  Otherwise, everyone's dreams of having a TV-free family vacation are about to come true!

Information Regarding Meals --- We Love Potluck!

In true midwest fashion, we will be doing the meals as potlucks, with different rooms scheduled for different courses for each meal.  We believe that this will keep the trip extra interesting.

We assigned different rooms courses as detailed below.  We will ask that each room sends a representative on a joint shopping trip each day to purchase food for their designated course.

Every breakfast, and 1/2 of lunches will be done independently.  Individuals can either purchase breakfast items during the shopping trip or make other arrangements.  There is a place for dining on campus that will be open on Monday and Tuesday.

We will be supplying the cooking utensils and pots and pans, as although each suite comes with a stove and fridge, it does not come with any cookware.

Snacks, drinks, paper plates, and napkins will all be provided through a separate $10 fee per person.  Roger will be coordinating this bill along with the fees for linens and towels.

Potluck "assignments" are as follows:

Welcome...What to Bring, and $$$

Here in California we are all looking forward to hosting you for the upcoming Joe-Gert reunion.  As you all should know by now, we will be staying at my place of work, California Lutheran University, and will have a variety of activities (swimming, volleyball, basketball) available on campus as well as activities in Southern California.

A bit more information:

What to Wear -- Southern California (SoCal) is notorious for unpredictable summers.  Although there is almost no chance of rain in early July, the temperatures could easily be in the low 60's at night and 90's during the day.  It could also be very cool during the day (high 60's).  So, I would encourage folks to bring a variety of attire including beach/swimwear and sweatshirts.

What Else to Bring -- Individuals should certainly feel free to bring any family mementos.  One room's living room (see more information regarding the rooms in the lodging post) will be set up to display such things.  Also, any favorite games are certainly welcome for those who want to lug them to CA.

Cell Phone Numbers -- We ask all traveling parties to provide a cell phone number or two as we will be providing airport pick-up to many.  One can either e-mail me at ryanvo.rvo@gmail.com, or add a response to the webpage.

Finances -- We put together the following sheet demonstrating full fees.  I understand than many have already paid some fees, those payments are not reflected on the sheet below.  Dad (Roger) will be your collection agent.  (Image should zoom by clicking on it.)
